Through his distinctive visual style, he made his work and creative journey worthy of in-depth study. His visual paintings are surfaces where the letter and its form harmonize as an integral part of Islamic artistic and cultural heritage. Along with the other elements of the work its aesthetic and intellectual philosophy and its color fields, his art engages both the mind and the emotions of the viewer. El-Sarrag’s works affirm to the observer that they are in the presence of an artist with a distinct and personal artistic identity. He possessed immense skill in adapting each letter, drawing on its qualities, suggestions, and linguistic and symbolic meanings to compose refined, creative visual artworks. The late great artist Kamal El-Sarrag, with his well-known passion for Islamic heritage, succeeded in affirming the evolution of Islamic art toward a modern artistic direction reinforcing its value and relevance within the Arab individual. Through the language of art, he empowered the artist to deliver their message in an innovative and ever-renewing form, using techniques that flowed with harmony and grace, producing timeless works that now stand as part of this distinguished artist’s legacy.

In his ever-evolving exploration of aesthetic relationships within the letter Sīn (س), artist Kamal El-Sarrag continues his journey with this letter, which he began years ago. He presents abstract compositional variations with a vivid and immediate impact, starting by integrating the letter into visually engaging relationships that create a form of dialogue between shapes. In all of El-Sarrag’s works, there appears to be an unending desire and a constantly renewed drive that enriches and propels him to expand and diversify his forms subjects to a rational and structured logic. He employs various methods and approaches from one painting to another in terms of composition and treatment. This diversity, combined with the overarching unity of the work representing a phase in the artist’s evolution prevents the viewer from sensing monotony or repetition. Each step in the development of the artist’s style and central idea opens new possibilities for formal expression, governed by processes of selection, elimination, addition, deconstruction, and reconstruction. Thus, El-Sarrag derives his aesthetic relationships on the canvas surface from a drive of structured play, a concept central to contemporary aesthetics. The letter intermingles, intertwines, collides, and multiplies with its fellow letters in an evident beauty free from fatigue, boredom, or struggle. Here, artistic experience appears as an advancement in the level of play. As Herbert Spencer said: “When the mind becomes engaged, it savors beauty… attention is liberated from action directed toward distant goals and is set free to contemplate images for their own sake.

The letter Sīn(س) is the true protagonist in El-Sarrag’s exhibition. I can’t say for certain why the artist chose the letter Sīn as the basis for all his visual compositions. In Broad terms, perhaps because of its composing beauty, visual elegance, ability to be reshaped and transformed into infinite patterns and combinations. Or perhaps, and this thought came to me as I contemplated his exhibition, it’s because his own name begins with it. It could also be because Sīn is the letter that signals a question; the symbol of inquiry, of all that is asked and yet unanswered. In recent years, the use of Arabic letters by contemporary visual artists has become a notable phenomenon. From it came out countless abstract forms and compositions, created through various techniques, visions, and concepts. Nonetheless, what captures my attention in Kamal El-Sarraj’s exhibition is his choice of a single letter, from which he draws all his compositions. He plays with it through varied colors and forms. El-Sarraj uses bright, vibrant, luminous colors that suggest a decorative aesthetic vision. The letter Sīn dances across the canvas, emerging from one radiant color to enter another even more vivid, as if the paint tubes have left the palette and spilled onto the canvas, running, leaping, and unfolding in a fantastical journey that roams freely through and with the imagination. Or as if they are dazzling, sparkling carnival ribbons released or tossed spontaneously, taking on a life of their own moving with free motion until they finally fall into a comfortable mix. An exploration within the composing that reflects broad capabilities... and a wild imagination that knows no limits As I stood before these works, they stirred memories of animated films, particularly those of the artist Norman McLaren, who would take a single, simple line and make it dance, transforming it into stories, into rain, into voyages through outer space. His was a world of fantasy, sparked by the most minimal of means. Returning to El-Sarraj, one senses his personal, introspective vision born of his experience in visual art, and his approach to color and line unified in a harmonious structure, rich with possibilities that seem never to run out.

لقاء الأساتذة … وبينما يستخدم الفنان طه حسني الأرقام العربية في خلق تكويناته، نرى الفنان كمال السراج يستخدم الحروف الأبجدية منطق آخر يتبع التشكيل الحر القائم على التوازن والتناغم الحركي واللوني وبين الوحدات في تأليف زخرفي منثور غير منظوم. والفنان السراج في معرضه هذا يعمق تجربة العام الماضي التي استخدم فيها حرف ال ـ »س» بنفس المنطق ولكننا هذه المرة نلاحظ كفي اتسعت امكانيات الحرف بين أنامله فأعطى بغزارة وسخاء وتعدد بعيد عن الرتابة.

El Sarrag Exhibition This exhibition presents an advanced approach to the use of Arabic calligraphy as an art form. In it, the artist explores geometric compositions that evoke the ornamental qualities of Islamic art. The artist also succeeded in using colors with a musical modulation at times a gentle, delicate artist like the morning breeze, and at other times bold and intense, shaking your core and emotions through the language of music. His exhibited works reflect the view of the German philosopher Ernst Cassirer, who believed that the mission of art is not limited to imitating natural beauty or replicating realistic forms. Rather, it lies specifically in the creation of certain forms or the invention of a set of original models, through which the artwork reveals a personal character that distinguishes it from all others.
